Sadie - in Maine!

This sweetheart is a mountain cur or black mouth cur mix who is very food-motivated and loves a tasty treat. She is 7 years old and 52 lbs. Her family is unable to keep her and wants the very best environment for her.

This sweet and busy girl lives with children and does great with kids of all ages, including visiting toddlers. She may nudge the small kids for attention with her nose but is so sweet with them.

Sadie is a survivor! She has myasthenia gravis that has been in remission for two years – so much so that she runs with her human and swims as much as she gets a chance on the lake where she lives. She had a special feeding chair ( a Bailey chair) due to megaesophagus but has not used it in almost a year. Her family is willing to send her chair with her. She is no longer on medication and is doing great! She uses just an elevated set of bowls to eat.

Sadie recently met one of our volunteers. She barked briefly and apparently if you are the UPS man she will bark for longer. She was such a good girl and took treats so gently.  She loved being pet and scratched and is a “leaner”. Sadie does the cutest thing where she sits up on her hind legs and holds out her front paws for you to massage her paws. When she is relaxed she is just putty in your hands!

Sadie is afraid of cats; the neighbors’ cats come onto her property and she whines and runs away. There is also a groundhog that has been taunting Sadie and she has never gone after it. She chases squirrels but doesn’t care about the turkeys that come by. She can get overstimulated if there is a high energy situation such as one of the kids’ soccer games. Once her humans walk her around a bit she settles down. She goes out on the boat with her family and she does well but if they start jumping off the boat Sadie will get unsettled and nervously worry about her family. She will get into the trash if you leave it accessible to her.

Sadie has always lived as an “only” and has had some recent difficulty with other dogs so we think she will be unable to share a household with them, or be in a multi-dog environment, especially with small dogs or puppies.

We know it’s a tall order to find a home for a special needs girl like Sadie where she needs to be the only pet and where her humans will have to be alert for any signs or symptoms of MG returning.

Please note: we do not have a physical facility where the dogs are housed; they are cared for in our wonderful foster network throughout New England. It is our expectation that, once approved, a potential family will meet the dog(s) in the foster setting where they are feeling safe and loved.
