To apply to adopt Dan or any of our sweeties, please check out our application.
Please note: We do not have a physical location, but we are supported by a network of wonderful foster homes that are spread throughout New England. A dog will need to be visited by a prospective adopter in the foster home where they are feeling safe and comfortable.
Dan - in Maine!
Newest Update: December 2016
Dan is such a doll but can not cut a break. He is back in rescue because his family changed and neither could keep this boy. We thought he had found his happily ever after but he needs just one more chance to show you what a great boy he is. Dan is terrific with other dogs and will play all day then flop down for a good nap with his canine or human buddy.
Dan has lived with cats and doesn't mind them. He will try to play chase but then gets confused when they don't want to play like a dog. Small children are also a mystery to Dan and their sudden movements and unexpected noises make him nervous. Older respectful kids are fine for Dan.
Dan can have difficulty meeting new people if the situation is high energy such as greeting at the door. His new family will need to continue management and training to help him be successful in this situation. Some training support will be provided to make his adoption a success. Dan has had some training in two different environments and his current trainer is Kristen at KompletelyK9. She says,
"Dan has been doing well meeting people; his body language tells me he is slightly hesitant with new people, but not super fearful. He doesn't bark or growl at them and once he has a few seconds to smell and get more comfortable he takes petting well and solicits affection. He even licked the neighbor’s hand in his shop the other day. He hasn't been in big crowds or super hectic environments with people and those are situations that should be avoided for him as much as possible. I think he would be great in a home that is not chaotic; a reasonably quiet home with at least one other dog would be good I think. He really loves other dogs. Dan is an absolutely great dog who I think can succeed easily if a new owner will listen."
Dan is completely housetrained, crate-trained and can actually be trusted out of the crate. He loves to play with toys and is VERY treat motivated. He knows lots of commands and loves to have a job to do to please his human companions.
Dan is great on leash and loves to sniff everything with his hound nose. Dan is 3 and 1/2 years old and is about 60 lbs now. We think he is a shepherd/hound mix.
He is such a people pleaser but also a dog lover so he would fit in many homes as long as there is good leadership and an opportunity for training and exercise. He is a handsome marvelous boy!
