Sophia - in Maine!

Newest update: December 2022

Meet shy,  sweet Sophia. Like many dogs rescued as an adult, it is clear Sophia missed out on critical socialization with humans but with love, care, and patience she has grown comfortable in her foster home.  She is approx. 6 years old and her soft, silky fur comes from a mix of Labrador and hound we suspect. She is really a beautiful girl!

Whoever welcomes Sophia into their home will need to understand she’s wary of new people, takes longer to warm up to most men, and takes time adjusting to new things. Her current foster home has another dog who she gets along well with and a cat, and she has had exposure to several other small to big dogs and done well with proper introduction. She tends to be protective of her safe spaces, food, and person, but plays well otherwise. Her sensitive side means she is very intuitive in reading people’s demeanors and knowing when someone needs a snuggle.

Sophia would thrive in a quiet (maybe all female) home with a set routine. Young children are too unpredictable for her but older, dog savvy children at home may be acceptable. Her forever family should expect it to take a few months for Sophia to settle in, but also be aware that new things and sudden noises can trigger anxiety still. She has successfully gone on outings with her foster family to friends’ homes and progressively longer walks around the neighborhood and in new areas. For those she has come to know and trust, she shows it with her wiggly butt, snuggles, and presenting her favorite stuffie. Sophia loves the open water and her backyard kiddie pool as well as fetch. She loves to roam her fenced in yard, lay among the flowers, and roll in the grass. Inside, when it’s time to nap, Sophia likes to burrow under pillows and blankets. While she is familiar with a crate, it is not her happy place but she does well at home alone without being crated.

Since each transition has caused upheaval in her life, we’re really looking for the right fit for Sophia to ensure she transitions from her current foster to her forever home. If you are an experienced dog owner with patience and understanding for the time it will take for Sophia to adjust, we’d love to hear from you.

A quieter home with a consistent routine and another dog are musts for her. Her furry foster sibling is a wonderfully calm companion who has helped Sophia tremendously.  Sophia loves to play with her pal and the fenced yard at her foster home is perfect for her! Sophia is a fan of chasing rodents and turkeys.

If you have experience with shy dogs, you might be just the right match for Sophia.

Please note: we do not have a physical facility where the dogs are housed; they are cared for in our wonderful foster network throughout New England. It is our expectation that, once approved, a potential family will meet the dog(s) in the foster setting where they are feeling safe and loved.
