Nixon - in Maine!
Newest update: March 2016
Nixon is a gorgeous, amazing dog! He is four years old and is a beautiful hound dog - maybe Treeing Walker Coonhound mix? He has met a variety of dogs and does well with everybody though he can have some trouble meeting new dogs on leash. In a day care environment he has done very well meeting them off leash. He is living with two male dogs and loves them. He tends to guard his family, his prized posessions (like bones or food that he has swiped) nd his home so it is recommended he be in an adult-only home with experienced owners who can provide good leadership and a lot of quality exercise time. He'd be a great working dog and likely a great jogging parter. He is a bouncy boy who would love to join an active family!
Nixon walks well on his easy walk harness. He enjoys chew toys and playing games. He is fully housebroken and an all around sweet guy who likes to please. His long legs and lean body will make him an excellent running partner. His goofiness will make you smile. Nixon is a gorgeous sweet boy!
Nixon, like some dogs who were rescued as adults, has had behavior traits that make him require training support and an experienced home. He will bark at dogs on his walks or when he's at the house, and he sometimes does not want new people to come into the house.
We had a trainer evaluate Nixon after he was showing some guarding issues and she tells us that he is a very smart cookie who needs mental as well as physical stimulation and that he needs a good leader to help him understand that he does not need to take the job of guard dog. She says he is totally workable with good boundaries and a loving, active family. We don't give him bones because he will protect them. He also works hard to get to people food whether it's on the coffee table, counters or anywhere else he can get to. He doesn't love his crate but is just too naughty to be trusted out of it.
Nixon went to the vet recently and he was such a good boy! Everyone there loved him. He sat, did shakes, and rolled over to submit to the vet. Nixon had been having some trouble with his ears (repeated infections in those beautiful hound ears) but he is now on great food and his ears are clean and wonderful!
Nixon likes to come to adoption events with us and he is the life of the party, greeting everyone with tail wags and kisses. The right family will just love him. A tall fenced yard would be ideal for him and someone who likes to play.
To apply to adopt Nixon or any of our sweeties, please check out our application.
Please note: We do not have a physical location, but we are supported by a network of wonderful foster homes that are spread throughout New England. A dog will need to be visited by a prospective adopter in the foster home where they are feeling safe and comfortable.
Thank you for considering rescue!
Nixon is in Cumberland County, Maine and is ready to find his forever family !
